Auction of onions at Lasalgaon APMC halted due to bandh call

Nashik: The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Lasalgaon did not witness auctioning of onions on Tuesday due to the bandh call made by the Sakhal Maratha Morcha.The APMC management had already informed about the move in view of the bandh called by the maratha outfit in villages belonging to the eastern parts of Niphad taluka. An APMC official, while talking to TOI, said they had decided not to conduct any auction on Tuesday in view of the bandh called by the Marathas, seeking OBC reservation for the community members.Theonion auction will resume as usual from Wednesday, the official added.Currently, the arrival of onions at the Lasalgaon APMC has reduced significantly with only around 10,000 quintals of the produce being auctioned on an average per day. On Monday, the average wholesale price of onions at Lasalgaon was recorded at Rs 4,600 per quintal, against the average wholesale price of Rs 4,800 per quintal on Saturday — the last working day of the week.On Monday, the minimum and maximum wholesale prices of onions were recorded at Rs 1,901 and Rs 5,200 per quintal, respectively.We also published the following articles recentlyMarket hit as APMC workers strike over Maratha quotaThe APMC wholesale market in Vashi, Mumbai, was closed on Friday due to a strike by Mathadi workers supporting the Maratha reservation agitation. This led to a shortage of essential commodities, particularly vegetables and fruits. Traders and farmers had already stopped sending supplies since the decision to strike was made. The strike also affected unloading operations at the market, impacting around 2,500 trucks and resulting in significant losses to the transport industry. Mathadi leader Narendra Patil stated that further strikes would follow if the government does not address the reservation issue.Govt imposes minimum export price of $800 per tonne on onion till Dec 31The Indian government has imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of $800 per tonne on onion exports until the end of the year in order to increase the availability of the vegetable in the domestic market and control prices. Onion prices have risen to Rs 65-80 per kilogramme in the retail market in New Delhi due to lower supply. Mother Dairy, Bigbasket, and Otipy are selling onions at prices ranging from Rs 67-70 per kg, while local vendors are selling them for Rs 80 per kg.Onion prices remain high in national capital, all India average rate at Rs 53.75 per kgThe average retail price of onions in Delhi remained at Rs 78 per kilogram, despite wholesale prices in Maharashtra cooling down after export restrictions were imposed. The all-India average retail price increased to Rs 53.75 per kilogram. The spike in prices is due to speculation, as there is enough stock available to meet demand. The imposition of a minimum export price is helping to reduce prices in Maharashtra. The new crop of onions will start arriving in November, and the government will release buffer stock to increase availability and control prices.
