207 deaths reported due to accidents in Nashik last yr

Nashik: Altogether 207 people lost their lives and 540 were injured in road accidents in Nashik city in 2022, according to a report released by the Union ministry of road transport and highways on Tuesday.In terms of ranking among 50 cities, Nashik moved one place up in 2022 in terms of road fatalities at 33 as compared to 2022, when 185 people died.The city had ranked 35th in 2022 in terms of injuries suffered by people in road accidents. In 2021, it had bagged 36th spot in the same category, with 403 injuries.Furthermore, Nashik city registered 479 road accidents in 2022 as against 470 in 2021, ranking 41 last year as against 38 in 2021. In 2022, these 50 cities accounted for 16.6 per cent of the total accidents and 10.1 per cent of total fatalities in the country.In terms of road accidents and fatalities, Delhi topped the chart with 5,652 accidents and 1461 deaths last year. Chennai which was number one on the list in 2021 in terms or road accidents with 5,034 accidents, slipped to number five spot last year with 3,452 accidents. Chennai had bagged the second spot in terms of road fatalities in 2021 with 998 deaths. It slipped to the 10th spot last year with 507 deaths.In 2022, these 50 cities accounted for 16.6 per cent of the total accidents and 10.1 per cent of total fatalities in the country.Rajeev Choubey, risk management specialist at Resilient India, an NGO working in the field of disaster risk and accident risk reduction on roads and highways, said, Speed calming measures are a must to control road accidents. Preventive measures like putting up speed breakers and illuminating road junctions is a must. We would suggest the same during the district level road safety meeting. DCP (headquarters and traffic) Chandrakant Khandvi said, While the police are working to discipline erring motorists and spreading awareness about following traffic rules, we are continuously in communication with the civic administration to improve road conditions to prevent accidents. Vijayawada ranked 13th and Vizag ranked 18th among 50 cities in terms of road accident fatalities. Andhra Pradesh as a whole saw a slight decrease in road accidents but an increase in deaths. Factors contributing to the increase in fatalities include non-compliance with safety measures, faulty road engineering, and speeding. Efforts should be made to identify and rectify road design deficiencies and create facilities to reduce accidents.1.68 lakh people died in 4.61 lakh road accidents in 2022: Road ministry reportA new report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reveals that there were 461,312 road accidents in India in 2022, resulting in 168,491 fatalities and 443,366 injuries. This marks an 11.9% increase in accidents and a 9.4% increase in fatalities compared to the previous year. The report also highlights that 32.9% of accidents occurred on national highways, 23.1% on state highways, and 43.9% on other roads. The data for the report was collected from police departments across the country.Speeding caused 71 per cent of all road deaths last year: Government dataOver-speeding caused 70% of road deaths in India in 2022, with a record 168,491 fatalities and 440,000 injuries reported. Not using safety devices such as helmets and seat belts accounted for a significant number of deaths, with 50,000 two-wheeler riders dying due to not wearing helmets. Speeding was found to be the leading cause of road deaths, increasing from 64% in 2018 to 71% in 2022. The report also highlighted violations of traffic rules, including drunk driving, jumping traffic lights, and using mobile phones while driving. There was a 25% rise in pothole-related deaths.
