Dist election office, colleges join hands to make students aware of poll rights

Nashik: The Nashik district election office (DEO) and Pune-based Worship Earth (WE) Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with 51 colleges to form electorial literacy clubs (ELC) to make youngsters aware of their rights in the election process.Under the MoU, every college in the district will select a campus ambassador who will be an intern working to spread the message of the Election Commission of India and make the youth aware of the democratic process. Jalaj Sharma, district collector of Nashik and the district election officer, said that the intention of the ELCs was to increase voter registration in the age group of 18-19 years and 20–29 years. There are nearly 2.2 lakh youngsters who are between 18-19 years. The administration intends to reach out to all of them so that they enrol themselves. The colleges are being roped in to ensure that every eligible person is enrolled with the election department. Even the administration will participate in the programmes conducted by the colleges, Sharma said.The DEO is also taking help of private coaching classes in the exercise.Shashikant Mangrule said that the ELC will see the participation of a professor as a nodal officer, a representative from each classroom, and the campus ambassador.Their duties will be to enrol the students and their relatives, ensure their names and addresses are correct, raise awareness about the Constitution, its preamble, importance of election and programmes on National Voters Day. The students will be mobilised in the colleges to strengthen their participation in the democratic process, said Mangrule. Tejas Gujarathi from the WE Foundation, said, Nashik is among the 11 districts where the programme is being launched.
