ACB officials give report to improve conviction rate in corruption cases

Nashik: Senior officials of the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) have submitted a report to the Maharashtra government on various measures that can be taken to improve the conviction rate as well as the efficiency of the department.Vishwas Nangre Patil, additional director general of Police of the state ACB, said using Section 164 of the CrPC for recording statements of complainants would go a long way in increasing the conviction rate, especially in corruption cases.Nangre Patil was in Nashik on Saturday as part of the Vigilance Awareness Week during which he spoke to reporters.The conviction rate in corruption cases is in single digit.Nangre Patil said that the department was working towards improving the conviction rate. In the report submitted before the state government, stress has been laid on recording statements of the complainants in front of the magistrate.Most of the times, the complainants in bribery cases turn hostile by changing their statements. This results in acquittal of the accused. Statements of complainants recorded before the magistrate would prove important so that there is no scope of the complainant turning hostile. This would definitely help in improving the conviction rate, he said.Based on the instructions of the Bombay High Court, the state government has formed a committee to formulate measures to increase the efficiency of the ACB. Senior state ACB officials have submitted a report about the same to the government.The HC also pointed out that the government should increase manpower to enhance the efficiency of the ACB. Nangare Patil admitted that corruption cases were increasing significantly in Maharashtra. Nashik and Pune topped the chart in corruption cases this year. Of the 700 successful traps by the ACB so far, Nashik region recorded140 traps followed by Pune region with 124.The 700 traps this year till November 2 are 13 percent more than last year, when 629 trap cases were registered.The maximum number of bribery trap cases is from the revenue department followed by the police department.ACB officials said that people have more work with the revenue and police departments than with any other departments owing to which the bribery cases are more with the two departments. The ED officer, Naval Meena, is currently posted in Imphal and was in Jaipur on leave. Naval Meena has been the investigative officer in a ponzi scam case worth over Rs 560 crore. The ED has initiated an inquiry against him and he will remain suspended pending the investigation.Those crying corruption in state are like termites: CMChief Minister Hemant Soren distributed offer letters to 5,132 youths in Daltonganj. He criticized the Centre and the opposition BJP during his speech, accusing them of corruption and neglecting the state.
