Lanterns with traditional design flood markets ahead of Diwali

Nashik: The city is embracing the festive season with fervour and decorative lanterns have added to the colour. People have started thronging the city markets to purchase various articles for Diwali, which falls on November 12.As Saturday was the last weekend ahead of Diwali, markets witnessed heavy rush of people to buy various puja articles and lanterns.Lanterns with traditional designs are in heavy demand, said Nilesh Shah, one of the sellers along the busy MG Road near the Red Cross Signal. Since there is also a demand for new designs and concepts, we have been selling lanterns made from jute for the last few years. Lanterns sell in the price range of Rs200 to Rs 1,400 according to their size and design. Another seller, Vijay Kodilkar, said that prices of his lanterns range from Rs70 to Rs 1,400. People have stopped buying Chinese lanterns, so we prepare the lanterns ourselves. The items are made from articles like paper, cloth, plastic, jute and wood, and sell like hot cakes, said Kodilkar. Chains of lights too are setting the streets aglow. Shopkeepers said that new designs in the lighting system arrive every year and they try to keep as much variey as possible.Strings of plastic flowers in vibrant colours are available in an array of colours and designs. Sellers said that while the rush is high, it will increase in the days to come as the festival approaches.
