Traffic jams, chaos ensue in city before festival of lights

Nashik: Vehicular chaos and traffic snarls were witnessed in the Khadkali and Shalimar areas of the city as people came out in large numbers for Diwali shopping on Sunday.A large number of people thronged the city markets as it was the last Sunday ahead of the Diwali festival, which gets underway from Vasubaras, the first day of Diwali falling on Thursday.The city police have closed seven roads for the movement of vehicles in the old city area to avoid traffic congestion in the narrow lanes, motorists have had to take a detour around the closed roads.This led to more vehicles on the already-crowded streets. Illegal parking on the roadside left less space on the city streets. Saurabh Borade, a Cidco resident, said, We expected a rush in the old city market ahead of Diwali. People need to ensure that they park their vehicles in the parking lots only instead of parking them on the roadside. The police should start using towing vans for picking up illegally parked vehicles during such period.Shalimar, Raviwar Karanja, and the Khadkali signal witnessed tremendous traffic. Vendors have put up their stalls of petty articles used for Diwali on either side of the roads at various places. Commuters are now making alternative arrangements for commuting to the capital, while questioning the logic behind the ban during the festive season.
