Nashik MLAs unite against release of water from region to Jayakwadi dam

Nashik: The Nashik MLAs cutting across the party lines voiced their opposition to the release of water from Nashik to Jayakwadi dam in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Nashik MLAs, while speaking at the meeting chaired by district guardian minister Dada Bhuse, Monday collectively denounced the order of the Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) to release 8.6 TMC water to Jayakwadi dam. They claimed that the facts required to be taken into account before deciding the quantum of water to be released from Nashik had not been considered. The quantum of water in the dams, the wrong mention of the dams in the various complexes and the failure of the water resources department to register appropriate demand for water from the villages are some of the reasons for the lower demand for drinking water in the district. The water release from the district could invite calamity in the future, claimed Sinnar MLA Manik Kokate. MLA Saroj Aher of Deolali Camp also highlighted that the demand for water for the Jaljeevan Schemes has not been reflected in the reservation of water from Kashyapi Dam. The deputy speaker of legislative assembly Narhari Zirwal noted that the villages that draw water from the dams have not found any mention in the reservation plan. MLA Devyani Pharande pointed out that the Alandi dam was shown as part of Gangapur Dam complex that provides drinking water to Nashik Municipal Corporation. Summing up the discussions, MLA Kokate said, Though the matter is sub judice, the MLAs registered their opposition to the release of water given the fact that release of water could lead to a precarious situation, especially for the farmers. Bhuse asked the water resources department officials to note the issues raised by the MLAs and present the corrected figures to the MLA Devyani Pharande, who has filed a petition in the Bombay high court against the GMIDC decision. The department should also make a statement saying Alandi dam should be excluded from Gangapur Dam complex as it does not provide any drinking water to Nashik city, he said.
