Pulmonologists urge citizens to celebrate eco-friendly Diwali

Nashik: Pulmonologists in the city have appealed to people to celebrate green Diwali. The doctors said that they get many patients, including children and adults, who visit them with complaints of breathlessness, discomfort in breathing etc during this time of the year.Smoke emanating from bursting of firecrackers is hazardous for young children and the old.It is especially harmful for people who suffer from asthma, said doctors. Every year during Diwali we get patients suffering from lung problems, mainly because of pollution from firecrackers. This year, the weather conditions are not good, the air quality has deteriorated in some parts of the city and there is a wave of viral infection as well. The pollution from the smoke of firecrackers would add to the problem, said former president ofIMA Nashik Dr Sameer Chandratre.The doctors said that firecrackers which create less sound emanate more smoke and these are wheels, phulzadis, etc which people give young children to burn. EGanesh Jadhav, a senior citizen from Indiranagar, said, Before bursting firecrackers, people should give a thought if there are elderly people around and act accordingly. Consider parking your car in a known garage or paid multi-story parking if you are not using it.
