Mahagenco wards off power cut issue just before Diwali

Nashik: A closed unit of the Maharashtra State Power Generation Companys (Mahagenco) Nashik thermal power station was made operational after one of the two functional units developed a technical snag on Thursday.According to the officials, at 3pm on Thursday, the operational unit stopped functioning and the power availability dropped by 125 MW. This forced the power distribution company to carry out emergency load shedding in several rural ares around Nashik city. Mahagencos failure to start the other unit would have forced load shedding even in the urban areas. There was a technical snag in one of the two units generating power. After attempts to revive the unit failed, the administration decided to start the third unit which started generating electricity by night, a senior official from the Mahagenco said. There is a huge demand for electricity by the industries as they want to finish their production before Diwali holidays. Power demand in residential areas has also gone up due to the festivities. The current rise in mercury level and lack of moisture in soil due to poor rains, has forced the farmers to start their electric pumps. All of this have contributed to the rise in power demand; hence it was a tough time to ensure electricity for all. As a result load shedding was carried out in several parts of rural Nashik — strictly around Nashik city, said the senior official. However, there was no issues in power supply on Friday as the generation was back on track. The authorities also pointed out that currently the demand in Nashik city, Nashik rural (Niphad, Trimbakeshwar and Nandgaon talukas) and for industries was about 650 MW. The region experiences a rise of around 30 MW during peak period, the official said.
