Nashik civic body set to seek more water

Nashik: The civic body in Nashik city is set to seek an additional water quota of 650 mcft for the current water reservation period.The decision of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) to demand additional water for the city comes following the instructions of district guardian minister Dada Bhuse to stakeholders like NMC, MIDC, Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) and other civic bodies in the district.During a meeting to decide the water allocations for the October-July water reservation period (2023-24), Bhuse told these stakeholders to chalk out plans for water considering their requirement till August 31, 2024.The water resources department (WRD) of the state government allocates water share to the different stakeholders every year, including the NMC. The water reservation period is between October 15 and July 31.But preparing for delayed rains next year too, the district guardian minister has asked the WRD to extend the reservation period by a month, up to August.Earlier, NMC had sought water reservation of 6,100 mcft of water for the reservation period between October 15, 2023, and July 31, 2024. Now, it will be making a revised demand of 6,750 mcft of water for the October-August period.NMC officials said they are waiting for the minutes of the meeting of the district guardian minister on water allocations. We will then submit our fresh demand for water quota to the WRD, they said.The daily water requirement of Nashik city is 556 million litres per day (MLD) or 19.6 mcft per day. The Gangapur dam complex is the major source of water for the city as it meets around 80% of the citys water requirement. They plan to increase the supply of water tankers and pipeline water across the city. However, due to the elections, they need permission from the election commission this year. The district collector has instructed PHED to deploy water tankers at selected locations during the festival days. The department is trying to keep additional manpower deployed despite most officials being on election duty.Canal breach fixed, but city faces water shortageGurgaon is facing a water crisis due to a breach in the Gurgaon Water Supply canal. The breach has resulted in a 20% shortfall in raw water supply to the Basai treatment plant. As a result, several areas in the city have complained about inadequate water supply for the past three days. The GMDA has been rationing supply and diverting treated water from another plant to ensure water reaches maximum areas in the city. The authorities are hopeful that the supply will be normalized by Saturday.Water level in nullah goes down as assembly panel visits cityDuring an inspection of polluting industries along the banks of Buddha Nullah in Ludhiana, it was discovered that dyeing units had dumped their waste water in vacant plots. The water level in the drain was lower than usual, indicating the dumping. The officials suspect that the dyeing unit owners had been informed about the visit in advance, as the units were closed on the day of inspection. The committee members have requested details of all closed and functional dyeing units for further action.
