Diwali week generates over 750 tonnes of excess waste

Nashik: The civic body collected 763 tonnes of additional waste from over 350 garbage vans during seven days of Diwali festival between November 6 and 12. Usually, 730 tonnes of waste is generated in the city on an average per day, which is collected through garbage vans and transported to the compost plant at Pathardi area on the outskirts of the city. According to Avesh Palod, director, solid waste department of the NMC, the average waste generation in the city increased from 730 tonnes per day before Diwali to 839 tonnes per day in seven days from November 6 during the Diwali festival.In the Diwali period last year, the daily waste collection was around 750 tonnes per day. Usually, people start cleaning their houses and commercial establishments around three four days before the Diwali festival. Waste is also generated due to packaging materials used to pack gift items, sweet boxes, firecrackers and other waste, Palod said. An NMC official said they had also deployed over 15 garbage vans in night shift to clean the major market areas that were crowded during Diwali festival. These markets areas like Raviwar Karanja, Shalimar, Main Road, M G Road and other market areas in Nashik Road were cleaned twice a day. After the end of the contract period of previous contractors, four new contractors were deployed by the civic body for six divisions from December last year to collect garbage from households across the city and transport them to the compost plant of the civic body on the outskirts of the city at Pathardi.140 additional garbage vans are deployed by the contractors for the next five years, considering the new residential areas developing rapidly on the outskirts around the city. Smaller garbage vans will also enter the narrow roads of the slums to collect the garbage. Over 350 garbage vans are operational in the city to collect garbage from the households in the city.New residential areas are growing rapidly in Adgaon, Mhasrul, Makhmalabad, Pathradi, new Indira Nagar and on the outskirts of the city. The police have recovered a stolen bike and a revolver used in the crime. The suspects have confessed to planning the robbery after noticing the jewelers renovated store.
