Nashik: The city traffic police have intensified their drive against traffic violators and issued challans to over two lakh erring motorists — almost one lakh more when compared to last year.Last year, between January and October, the police had fined 1,09,848 two-wheeler riders and four-wheeler drivers for traffic-related violations. This year, during the same period, the police have issued challans to 2,18,645 erring vehicle owners.A senior officer of the city traffic branch said, The police deployed on the streets are primarily streamlining vehicular traffic. They are also issuing challans to two- and four-wheeler drivers for traffic-related violations. The number of challans issued has increased as a result of traffic management on the roads. The police said they have stepped up action against all violators, including helmetless riders, not wearing a seatbelt, illegal parking of vehicles and jumping signals. This year, police officials issued challans to 95,000 helmetless two-wheeler riders — up from 45,000 offenders issued challans last year. Commuters, however, said although the police have intensified the action against traffic offenders, the traffic condition on the streets has not improved. Pravin Dhumal, a resident of Nashik Road, who travels to the city daily, said it is a nightmare to ride in the city. Its not a good experience. I have to struggle to find my way through the chaotic traffic. Many two- and four-wheeler drivers do not have any traffic sense. They cut lanes without considering the flow of traffic. Many motorists even drive on the wrong side of the road without bothering about the oncoming traffic, Dhumal said. He said apart from the traffic mess, several vehicles are illegally parked along the road. Vehicles are haphazardly parked along the road, adding to congestion. The civic administration has put no thought on setting up footpaths along the road, he said. Police officials said till October this year, they have slapped fines on 93,000 helmetless bikers; 14,299 motorists for driving without seatbelts; 5,198 for riding triple seat; 11,431 vehicle owners for illegal parking; 1,535 motorists for using dark film on window panes; 25,160 for no entry violations; 44,124 for signal jumping; 824 for speaking on cellphones while driving; 739 for crossing zebra line at traffic signals; 31,727 for speeding; and 14,000 for other offences.
