Forest dept plans vulture conservation centre in Nashik city

Nashik: The forest department, to prevent the possible extinction of a species of vultures, proposed a vulture conservation breeding centre (VCBC) in Anjaneri hills on Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Road.The proposed vulture conservation breeding centre will be set up for 8 crore, a government resolution said on Wednesday. This will be the first vulture conservation breeding centre in the state and is expected to be operational in two years as the infrastructure will have to be set up.The forest department proposed five new vulture conservation breeding centres in the country- one each in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Tripura.Pankaj Garg, deputy conservator of forest, said the state government sanctioned the funds for the states first vulture conservation and breeding centre that would come up at Anjaneri. There are eight vulture conservation breeding centres established in the country.The government issued a government resolution after the technical approval from the public works department of the state government. The state government has approved funds as per certain conditions, including that the forest department should ensure the ownership of the land before starting the work. The construction works are done under the specific head under which financial provision has been done.First vulture conservation centre was set up in 2004 at Pinjore in Haryana by the forest department. Another centre was set up at Rajabhatkhawa in West Bengal in 2006 and another at Rani in Assam in 2008.
