Male leopard killed in fight with another big cat

Nashik: Forest department officials in Nashik said a male leopard, aged between 5 and 6 years, was killed following a fight over territory with another big cat.Forest officials, who reached the spot on Saturday morning, found the animal lying dead in a pool of blood.The postmortem was carried out in the government veterinary hospital at Ashok Stambh.It was clear that the animal died due to heavy loss of blood, said a senior officer.Officials said they received a call in the early hours of the day from the residents of the Jalalpur village about a wild cat lying still in the area. The officials visited the spot and found the cat dead. When the forest officials looked around trying to understand the cause of death, they found marks on the dead leopards body, indicating there was a fight between two male leopards.The two cats fought for territory. The body of the dead leopard bore deep wounds on the neck, the officer added.The officer also said that none of the people had heard any noise. The injured farmer, identified as Nawab, suffered multiple injuries. The wildlife department rescued a 13-month-old female leopard, but it died later due to illness. The leopard was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment but succumbed to multiple organ failure. The farmers condition is reported to be fine according to villagers.
