Nashik smart city cell misses deadline to develop 171 roads

Nashik: The smart city development corporation in Nashik has missed the June-end deadline to complete the development of 171 major and minor roads in the city.The Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) is to develop 171 roads, measuring roughly 36km, in the old city areas at a cost of over Rs 237 crore. The work started in 2020. So far, the smart city cell has completed the work on only 102 major and minor roads, measuring 24km.Work on 69 roads, with a total length of 12km, is yet to be completed.The NMSCDCL officials said the road development work was affected, for almost two years, due to the Covid pandemic. They also had to stop during Ganapati, Navratri and other festivals.Moreover, we also had to stop work during the four monsoon months, from July to October. That is why we could not complete on time. However, we have restarted the work after the monsoon, and we are confident that all the remaining road work will be completed by December-end, said the officials.The project aims to upgrade the overall civic infrastructure of the city. It also entails improvement of selected existing roads in the gaothan area. Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur has instructed engineers to monitor the work and is conducting regular spot visits.Tepid response to TDR scheme for Katraj-Kondhwa Road workThe road widening project on Katraj-Kondhwa Road in Pune has faced obstacles due to the tepid response to the transferable development right (TDR) land acquisition scheme. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) introduced the special TDR scheme to fast-track the acquisition of land for the road widening project, but so far, only 1.60 lakh square metres of the required 2.88 lakh square metres has been secured. The remaining 80,000 square metres of land is yet to be acquired. The residents continue to face traffic snarls on the stretch as a result.
