Property tax collection in Nashik ₹144 cr, up by 25%

Nashik: The property tax collection of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has increased by 25% to Rs144 crore so far in the current financial year (2023-24), against Rs114 crore collected during the corresponding period last year.In the first week of November, the Nashik Municipal Corporation served notices to 2.37 lakh property tax defaultersfor defaulting property tax worth Rs470 crore and gave a 15-day ultimatum to pay the dues.The tax dues are pending with them for four to nine years.The issuance of notices yielded a good result as the civic body could collect Rs25 crore property tax in the past three weeks.The NMC administration has set a property tax collection target of Rs210 crore for the current financial year and municipal commissioner Ashok Karanjkar has given a deadline of December 31 to the property tax department for meeting the target.The civic body still has to collect Rs66 crore in the next 30 days to meet the tax collection target.Moreover, Nashik Municipal Corporation officials said they have also decided to snap water connections of property tax defaulters from the first week of December. This will also help them to collect dues to some extent from the defaulters.The civic body officials said they would also start issuing warrants against the defaulters, giving them an ultimatum of the confiscation of their properties.NMC is also eyeing Rs25 crore property tax dues pending with the various central and state government offices. So far, they have collected Rs4 crore from two or three government offices.In the last financial year (2022-23), the civic body had collected Rs188 crore towards property tax, which was the highest ever property tax collection during the past 40 years of establishment.As per the guidelines of the 15th Finance Commission, the civic body has to collect property tax amounting to Rs 210 crore to get a government grant.
