Police seize gutka worth over ₹98L, 99 arrested

Nashik: The Rural police seized gutka worth more than Rs 98 lakh in a special drive against its sale and that of illegal liquor in the district held between November 6 and 30.Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Shahaji Umap, the Nashik Rural police registered 93 cases and arrested 99 people under section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit offence) of the Indian Penal Code for selling gutka. The police officials also conducted 556 raids on various illegal businesses. These raids led to multiple cases being filed — 93 cases of gutka sale, 343 of illicit liquor sale, 87 cases of gambling, 19 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 10 under the Essential Commodities Act, and four cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. At least 754 people were detained in these raids and Nashik police recovered cash and articles worth over Rs 2.1 crore.
