Commuters struggle as bus terminus bursts at the seams

  • | Sunday | 3rd December, 2023

Nashik: Hundreds of commuters boarding or getting off city and state buses at the Nashik Road station terminus face inconveniences daily in the morning hours. The terminus is usually packed with city and state transport buses. There is usually a long queue of buses on the road near the station. Some drivers said that they often find no space to even enter the terminus.Even passengers who come to the terminus hardly have any space to move around and look for the buses to their destinations.Varsha Jadhav, a college student, who takes a bus from this terminus to the College Road, said, The rush is a daily occurrence. Often, I fail to find a bus to my destination among the 30 or 35 buses packed inside the terminus. At times, there are two or more buses on the same route, and no one knows which would be leaving first. If one boards the wrong bus, then there is a problem. Prakash Andhare, another commuter from the Dwarka area, said, I usually take a bus from Dwarka to Nashik Road to catch a Mumbai-bound train at 9.30am. Very often, the bus stops on the road outside for four to five minutes just because there is no space inside the terminus. Commuters like me then have to get down on the road and rush to the railway station. Adding to this problem is the rush of autorickshaws around the bus stand. Bus drivers find it hard to weave through this rush and exit the terminus. Many commuters said people who get off trains at the Nashik Road railway station and are new to the city do not understand the number system on the buses. Moreover, the employees appointed to help passengers are never seen during the rush hours. Drivers of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and city buses said the senior officers should make a proper system for the entry and exit of buses. MSRTCs divisional traffic officer Kiran Bhosale said: There is a huge rush at the Nashik Road railway station, mainly between 7am and 10am. This is because a large number of trains arrive at the station at this time. The timings of many buses are arranged according to the train schedule. Nonetheless, we have communicated with the officials of the city bus service to keep sufficient places for MSRTC buses as well during these peak hours. Officials said they too would try to work out a solution for this problem.
