Retail price of tomatoes in Nashik drops to ₹30 per kg

  • | Tuesday | 5th December, 2023

Nashik: The retail prices of tomatoes in Nashik have declined to Rs30-40 per kg compared to over Rs50 per kilogram a fortnight ago.Traders attribute the price drop to a decline in the average wholesale price of tomatoes at the states largest wholesale tomato market in Pimpalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC). One crate (containing 20kg tomatoes) which costed Rs500 a fortnight back is now Rs360 a crate. At the same time, heavy rain across the district last week have damaged tomato crops. The arrival of tomatoes in the second half of November increased the number of crates from 20,000 to 35,000 crates a day. This has now reduced to 10,000 crates at Pimpalgaon. Moreover, a majority of produce arriving at the markets comprises small-sized tomatoes, fetching lower rates. The demand from North India for Nashiks tomatoes has also waned as the produce is available in local markets there. According to an official from the Pimpalgaon APMC, the tomato season in some parts of the district like Niphad, Chandwad, Manmad and Yeola have already ended. Now, tomatoes are coming from Dindori, Girnare, Vani belt and other parts of the district. The minimum and maximum wholesale prices of tomatoes were recorded at Rs50 and Rs520 per crate respectively, on Monday at Pimpalgaon.
