4-member central team in Nashik to assess crop loss

Nashik: A four-member team of the Union ministry of agriculture visited Niphad, Yeola and Chandwad talukas of Nashik on Tuesday to assess damage to crops following the unseasonal rainfall on November 26. The team — comprising under secretary of department of agriculture and farmers welfare Manoj Kumar and deputy director Pankaj Kumar — also interacted with some of the affected farmers.An official of the state agriculture department said the team was mainly here to assess the loss of onion crops. They also visited vineyards in some villages in Niphad taluka of the district. After their visit, the team held discussions with the officials from the state agriculture department, the official said.As per an estimate, the unseasonal rains and hailstorm on November 26 had damaged standing crops and vineyards on 33,000 hectares across the district. The state agriculture department official said, We are in the process of carrying out final assessment of crop damage due to rains and hailstorm. The process is expected to be completed within the next two-three days. In Nashik, grape loss has been reported on 11,597 hectares, while onion crops have been damaged on 10,408 hectares. The farmers are currently receiving Rs 45,000 to 50,000 per quintal in the market, with prices expected to rise further. However, miscreants have recently stolen chillies from the fields, prompting farmers to increase security measures.
