NMC gets 33 doctors on honorarium basis

Nashik: The civic body has appointed 33 medical staffers in Nashik Road-based new Bytco hospital on honorarium basis, much to the relief of existing employees.The staff, which is expected to join duty shortly includes a general surgeon, two physicians, a gynaecologist, 2 paediatricians, an anaesthetist, 11 medical officers and 13 staff nurses. NMC health officials said that the new Bytco hospital has 200 beds, but inadequate medical staff adversely affected the functioning of the hospitals. So far, 30 of 33 medical staff appointed on honorarium have joined their duties, while remaining three are expected to join within the next couple of days, added an NMC official.NMC has seven hospitals and all of them are facing acute staff crunch since several years. Of the total 950 medical staff, around 450 various posts in the medical department of the civic body are vacant. Hence, the civic body decided to recruit medical staff, including doctors, medical officers and staff nurses on honorarium basis until the recruitment takes place. The dispute centers around recruitment policies formulated by the Indian government, with legal challenges pending.
