Nashik city witnesses significant rise in cybercrime

Nashik: There has been a significant increase in the number of financial frauds by cyber criminals in Nashik city this year when compared to the previous year. This year (till November), as many as 59 Nashik residents were duped of over Rs 6.6 crore by the cyber criminals. However, in 2022, 26 residents were duped of over Rs 92 lakh.An officer from the cyber police said bulk of the complainants this year were from those who were cheated by cyber criminals in job fraud cases.Such cases were negligent last year. A large number of people are falling prey to part-time or work-from-home job scams, the officer said.Complainants in all these cases came in contact with the conmen through social media platforms wherein they got information about huge earning potential. While the complainants initially received petty amounts for trivial tasks, they were told by the conmen to invest more money for gaining huge returns, the officer added.According to police, the victims also get to see a virtual wallet on the portal which shows them amount earned by them. While the conmen keep asking the victims to invest more and more money for better returns, the victims eventually realize that the amount shown in the wallet cannot be withdrawn, the officer said.They approach police only after realizing that they have been cheated. This year, 28 people lost over Rs 3.94 crore in job fraud cases, the officer added.Riyaz Shaikh, senior police inspector of the cyber police station said, Most of the victims in these cases are educated young people. We are also spreading awareness among the masses. Such cases are being observed all across the country. People have also lost huge amount of money in online lottery system, credit card frauds and other online scams. Deepak Kumar was charged under sections 419 and 420 of the IPC. The chargesheet, comprising 313 pages, was presented in court to seek judicial remand for the accused. Kumar is described as a habitual cheat involved in multiple cases of fraud and is reportedly involved in two more cases of a similar nature.In one day, cyber police stop criminals from siphoning off Rs 80 lakh from bank a/csMumbai police, using helpline number 1930, thwarts attempts to siphon off Rs 80 lakh from bank accounts in one day. The helpline, set up at Mumbai police headquarters, has recovered funds for victims of cybercrime, including a physician who lost Rs 32 lakh in forex trading. The helpline receives an average of 700 calls daily and operates 24x7. Victims are mostly lured into task fraud schemes. Reporting cyber fraud early increases the chances of blocking transactions and retrieving money. The helpline has prevented over Rs 20 crore from being siphoned off and returned most of the money to complainants after legal processes.
