Court fines man, awards 1 year’s RI for cruelty to wife

Nashik: The district and additional session court awarded one year of rigorous imprisonment to a Nashik-based 30-year-old man and slapped him with a fine of Rs 1,000 after finding him guilty of cruelty towards his wife.According to the complaint registered against Shankar Ramji Bhadange in July 2014, his wife had committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance owing to the harassment from him for not able to bear a child despite 10 years of marriage.Ramji Bhadanges wife had committed suicide on July 8, 2014 after which her father had registered a complaint against him with Peth police of the rural district, accusing him of treating her with cruelty and abetting her suicide.The case was investigated by police inspector Vithhal Pise of the Peth police station, while advocate Reshma Jadhav was the assistant public prosecutor.On Wednesday, Mridula Bhatia, district 1 and additional sessions judge upon examining the statements of the complainant, witnesses and circumstantial evidences submitted by the investigating officer found Bhadange guilty under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498 A (husband or relative of a woman subjection her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code and awarded him one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him of Rs 1,000.Personnel of the prosecution cell of the Peth police station followed up with the investigating officer, the complainant, witnesses and the assistant public prosecutor to ensure that all the relevant evidences were readily available during the course of hearing so that the accused got conviction in the domestic violence case.We also published the following articles recentlyHaryana Police registers case 5.5 years after youths suicide, family alleges delay and inactionHaryana police registers case in Safidon town after 5.5 years of Montu Sharmas suicide. Reddy slit his wifes throat at their residence in Agraharam village in May 2020. The police arrested him within a day and the case was heard by ASJ Shanti, who convicted him under 235 (2) of Cr.PC. Superintendent of police Y Rishant Reddy commended the police and prosecution teams for their efforts in solving the case.Cruelty by husband or his relatives accounts for majority of cases of crime against women, shows NCRB dataThe overall cases of crime against women rose by 4% in 2022, with cruelty by husband or his relatives accounting for the majority at 31.4%. The National Crime Records Bureaus report reveals that Delhi registered the highest rate of crime against women in the country at 144.4, while Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra reported the most cases. The report also highlights an increase in kidnapping and abduction cases, which accounted for 19.2% of crimes against women. Additionally, the report lists incidents of murder with rape/gangrape, with 248 cases reported in 2022.
