PATNA: Altogether 34 prisoners serving life imprisonment and completing 20 years in jail will be set free in a day or two, IG (prisons and correctional services) Mithilesh Mishra said after signing the release order on Friday.The state government took the decision on the Bihar State Sentence Remission Board recommendation made after its meeting on September 1. Out of the 34 convicts, 13 are those who had approached the Patna high court for the purpose. Maximum seven convicts would be released from the Buxar open jail followed by six from Shaheed Khudi Ram Bose central jail at Muzaffarpur.“The Centre has already accepted the CM’s proposal for remitting sentences of convicts on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Their names are being shortlisted,” Mishra said, adding remission was a continuous process.The state government releases those serving life imprisonment and completing 20 years jail term with 14 years of actual confinement. Six years are the various types of remissions given to the convicts inside jails.Earlier, the state government had ordered for remitting sentence of 74 convicts serving life imprisonment on June 12 this year.Before remission of sentence, a stern internal inquiry is made about the conduct of inmates inside the jail along with a report from SPs of the districts concerned that the prisoner’s release would not affect the peace in that area. Reports by officers of law and police departments play a role in recommending the release of an convict to the state government for remission of sentence.
