PATNA: One Tariq was arrested from Jehanabad on Saturday in connection with the murder of Tabrez Alam alias Firoz near the Kotwali police station in Patna on Friday.Tabrez was a member of the Gang of Wasseypur in Jehanabd and once a sharp shooter of former Siwan MP Mohammad Shahabuddin . Tariq had recently come out of jail on bail. According to police sources, he is also named in several cases of extortion and kidnapping. Tabrez’s mobile phone records revealed that he had an old rivalry with Tariq over a piece of land in Phulwarisharif and Jehanabad.Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj said both Tariq and Tabrez had lodged complaints against each other over the land disputes in Jehanabad and Patna. “In preliminary investigation, we got some clue against Tariq from Tabrez’s phone recovered from the spot. The accused also confessed to his involvement in the crime and has disclosed the name of the shooter who had fired the shots at Tabrez,” he said. The shooter has been identified as Guddu and Bablu, both from Jehanabad.The SSP said two of Tariq’s gang members eliminated Tabrez while he was approaching his SUV after offering the Friday namaz at Kotwali mosque around 3pm. Two bike-borne criminals pumped four bullets into Tabrez’s body. He was declared brought dead at PMCH.The police identified the shooters on the basis of the CCTV footages and seized their motorbike from the LIC office on Fraser Road. The SSP said, “The shooters were seen in the CCTV footage while leaving their bike near the LIC office and walking away. The motorbike had no number plate,” he said.Tabrez was also accused in more than half a dozen cases of murder, kidnapping, Arms Act and extortion. He had tried his luck in politics by contesting the 2010 state assembly elections on the Samajwadi Party ticket, but got only 5,000 votes. He was also likely to contest the 2020 assembly elections and had been seen with HAM(S) founder and former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi on many occasions.
