Suspected Maoists kidnap contractor in Munger

PATNA: At least 16 unidentified suspected Maoists kidnapped Murade panchayat head Anita Yadav’s husband Rakesh Kumar alias Narad and her nephew Purshottam Yadav from their home under the Haveli Kharagpur police station area in Munger district on Sunday evening. The armed forces are proceeding towards the suspected hideouts of Maoists. “According to family members, Purshottam was working as a contractor on a project of state water resources department. For this reason, the Maoists demanded levy from him.

PATNA: At least 16 unidentified suspected Maoists kidnapped Murade panchayat head Anita Yadav’s husband Rakesh Kumar alias Narad and her nephew Purshottam Yadav from their home under the Haveli Kharagpur police station area in Munger district on Sunday evening. Later, they released Rakesh.Though the area is considered Maoist-hit, the police have yet not confirmed their role in the crime.Kharagpur SDPO Polast Kumar told this newspaper on Monday that raids were on to nab the criminals and recover Purshottam. “We are not ruling out the possibility of Maoist activities, but it is not confirmed yet. The investigation is on,” he said.According to police sources, the kidnappers released Rakesh on Sunday evening after he assured them to pay the levy amount. The Maoists took Purshottam with them. “According to family members, Purshottam was working as a contractor on a project of state water resources department. The project is worth around Rs1 crore. For this reason, the Maoists demanded levy from him. After, he failed to pay the amount, 16 of them barged into Rakesh’s home and took Purshottam and him away,” said a police officer preferring anonymity.Haveli Kharagpur police have lodged a complaint against 16 unidentified criminals on the information received from Purshottam’s family.Munger DIG Manu Maharaaj told this newspaper that members of special task force, along with Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Haveli Kharaghpur police personnel were jointly conducting operation to rescue Purshottam. “All the criminals were armed. They had covered their faces with helmets. The armed forces are proceeding towards the suspected hideouts of Maoists. However, it was under investigation whether the crime was committed by the Maoists or some criminal gang,” he said.Earlier in March 2018, a mukhiya (village headman) and his young son were kidnapped by masked men from Dariyapur-2 panchayat under the Haveli Kharagpur police station area for not paying the levy.
