Bihar lifts ban on sale of live fish in Patna

Mohan Kumar, vice-president of Bihar Rajya Machchli Vyavsai Sangh, said live fishes form a small chunk of total fishes in Bihar.“The stock of live fishes in the state will not last for even two months. Thus, we want the ban on fishes to be lifted completely. Otherwise, we will stop sale of fishes across the state,” Mohan said.Meanwhile, the health department is in the process of collecting samples of fishes from all 38 districts in the state and send them to Regional Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL), Kolkata for tests. Bihar Rajya Machchli Vyavsai Sangh was also scheduled to launch a protest march on Friday from Bazar Samiti to Gardanibagh dharna sthal.Meanwhile, state food and consumer affairs minister Madan Sahni met chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday to put forth the demand of the fishermen and traders’ community.

PATNA: State health department on Thursday lifted the ban on sale, transport and storage of live fishes of all types in Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) area.A 15-day ban on all kinds of fishes – local as well as those brought from other states – was enforced in the city on Monday following reports of presence of high level of formalin and other heavy metals, including lead and cadmium , in fishes brought from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.“We have lifted the ban on live fishes as it was found that no preservatives are used in their transportation and trade,” health department’s principal secretary Sanjay Kumar told TOI, adding the ban on storage, transportation and sale of all kinds of dead fishes would remain effective.The blanket ban on sale of fishes in PMC area was being opposed statewide by different organisations of fishermen and traders.
