PATNA: As very few people know about the complimentary personal accident insurance to debit or credit card holders, the state transport department has urged the banks to let their customers know about this facility. The department has also planned to carry out a massive awareness campaign across the state to inform people about this insurance coverage, which comes complimentary with the cards without any premium charged.State transport secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said almost everyone has an ATM card, but people do not know that they can claim for hospital expenditure in case of road accidents. In case of road accident death, the victims nominee can avail the insurance money. "It is provided by almost all the public as well as private sector banks. The amount varies from card to card. For some of the cards, it starts from Rs2 lakh and can go up to Rs20 lakh. For some premium cards, the amount can go even higher," said Agarwal, adding the national payment corporation of India looks after the settlement. However, he said in spite of this facility, hardly any one avails it for lack of awareness. "Almost everyone has an ATM card in his pocket, but s/he does not know about the accidental coverage," said Agarwal. He further said there are certain criteria to be followed, which includes applying for the claim within 60 days of the accident. In case of death, the family members have to submit documents like death certificate and in case of hospitalisation, one has to give the hospitals bill and necessary documents asked by the bank."Since many people are not aware about this coverage, we have planned to rope in all the district transport officers to create awareness. We will also use our own database of accident victims and will inform them about the money which they can claim," said Agarwal, who had raised this issue in the recent meeting of state level bankers committee.Sources said there are some criteria also for availing the financial aid which comes complimentary with a debit or credit card, which includes minimum one successful financial or non-financial transaction at any channel, both intra and inter-bank within 90 days prior to the date of the accident.
