Amidst the distribution of appointment letters at Gandhi Maidan on Jan 13, a significant development unfolded as CM Nitish Kumar and Dy CM Tejaswi, seated adjacent to each other on the stage, displayed a notable disconnect— a scene repeated during their joint visit at Samastipur Medical College.

On January 23rd, Nitish Kumar made a political statement on the 100th Birth Anniversary of Late Sri Karpuri Thakur, posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna. Expressing disapproval of dynasty politics, he affirmed his commitment as CM until the 2025 elections. Tensions heightened when he suggested JDU speakers lead RJD committees, met with disagreement from the RJD.

This triggered party meetings within JDU and RJD, fueling speculation of a potential split before the assembly term— a scenario seemingly desired by Nitish Kumar. In parallel, BJP summoned Sushil Modi and Samrat Chaudhary to Delhi, meeting with Nadda and Amit Shah on January 25, 2024.

The political landscape in Bihar undergoes a seismic shift as the divide widens between RJD and JD(U). Nitish Kumar, serving as both Chief Minister and JD(U) Supremo, strategically reshapes his party`s leadership, aiming to establish supremacy. This involves replacing key figures associated with the RJD, a strategy not without repercussions.

Nitish Kumar`s assertive moves include appointing 15 individuals as National General Secretaries within JD(U), showcasing a shift in power dynamics. Figures like Ram Nath Thakur and Sanjay Kumar Jha are strategically placed, emphasizing continuity in leadership. The exclusion of five MPs, aligning with Nitish`s move to distance electoral ambitions from organizational roles, adds complexity.

Simultaneously, Nitish orchestrates significant changes by reshuffling ministers from the RJD to different departments, addressing dissatisfaction with controversial remarks. Ongoing discussions about seat distribution within the India Alliance and Lalu Yadav`s potential aspirations for Tejashwi to become Chief Minister add layers of complexity.

In this strategic political chess game, Nitish Kumar explores alliances, notably with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aiming for a favorable position in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The lack of a clear JD(U) vote bank raises questions about its impact. Chirag Paswan`s alignment with the BJP adds a dynamic element, pivotal in the unfolding narrative.

Meanwhile, political strategist Prashant Kishore launches the Jan Suraj Party, entering the political arena with an on-ground campaign in Bihar. Kishore`s vocal criticism of JD(U), nuanced stance towards other parties, and emphasis on specific issues resonate with sections of the electorate. His transition from a consultant to a frontline leader adds intrigue.

As Bihar becomes the stage for upcoming elections, the evolving narrative encompasses Nitish Kumar`s strategic maneuvers, potential alliances, and the rise of the Jan Suraj Party, vocal about challenging Nitish Kumar. The state`s political landscape is poised for a complex interplay of ambitions, alliances, and the emergence of new contenders, making it a narrative to watch closely in the coming months. Nitish Kumar’s ambition to remain CM is expected to continue with either BJP or RJD, as alone JD(U) may not secure power. At the moment, his tactic is to keep everyone guessing.
