In a decisive move, the Janata Dal United (JDU) has expressed its intention to independently contest 17 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar in the upcoming general elections, putting a question mark on the future of the ruling political   alliance in the State.

Nitish Kumar`s party is unwavering in its. If the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) does not agree to the demand of the JD (U) to cede 17 Lok Sabha seats, then Nitish Kumar’s party my go solo in the parliament elections. However, this stance poses a challenge for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), as they grapple with the demands of Left parties for nine seats and the Congress for 10, leaving only four seats for the RJD.

The gulf between Nitish Kumar and his Deputy Chief Minister was palpable at an event organized by the State Government January 13 at the city’s iconic Gandhi Maidan, where 26,900 appointment letters were formally distributed to youths selected for school teachers’ jobs.

Though there was bonhomie on the stage, the underlying tension could be felt by observers. While the two leaders spoke about the commitment of the ruling alliance to give jobs to unemployed youth, things did not appear to be normal below the surface.

The cat was out of the political bag by the next evening when the RJD held a multi-city press briefing saying, that mass employment of teachers was fulfillment of one of its key election promises.

The RJD asserted its dominant position by claiming credit for this milestone achievement after a decade of NDA rule in the State headed earlier by Nitish Kumar. and role of RJD in driving the agenda. The JDU`s initial silence on January 14 fueled speculation and intrigue, creating anticipation for their response.

Breaking the silence on January 15, the JDU`s supremo attended the RJD-organized Makarsankranti get-together, raising questions about the acceptance of RJD`s supremacy. Notably, the infrequent meetings between Lalu Yadav and Nitish Kumar, both neighbours in the State capital, only go to fuel political speculations.

It`s worth recalling that in the 2020 State elections, RJD emerged as Bihar`s single largest party, promising substantial employment. Now political analysts are watching with bated breath the next move of the Chief Minister and his party leaders.
