Nitish reiterates centralvarsity demand for PU

PATNA: CM Nitish Kumar on Tuesday reiterated his demand of central university status for Patna University (PU). While sharing the dais with governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to inaugurate the renovated Wheeler Senate Hall of PU on the occasion of Teachers Day, Nitish urged him to make efforts for grant of central university status to the PU.Earlier, the governor and the CM jointly inaugurated the Teachers Day function of Patna University by lighting the traditional lamp. The governor and the CM jointly honoured 35 retired teachers and 21 working teachers and employees of the PU by offering them Angvastram and mementoes.Nitish said: "I have been wishing since the beginning that Patna University gets the status of a central university. ...Though the seventh oldest university could not get the central university status, the Bihar Engineering College where I studied was upgraded into a National Institute of Technology (NIT) because of my efforts." Nitish said his government has allotted 125 acres of land for the new NIT-Patna campus."In 2017, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had arrived here to participate in the centenary year function of the Patna University, I had urged him to grant the central university status to it, but he did not accept our demand," Nitish said. The CM also asked the officials to put the proposal for its development before the cabinet meeting the same day. Later in the day, the cabinet approved a science block and girls hostel in PU.
