Muzaffarpur boat tragedy: 4 bodies fished out

PATNA: Four bodies were fished out on Friday as the NDRF and SDRF teams were engaged in finding out the rest of the missing persons in a boat tragedy in Muzaffarpurs Gaighat block on Thursday. Eleven persons, including eight schoolchildren, were reported missing after the disastrous boat tragedy. Among the bodies recovered were two of the children.Muzaffarpur DM Pranav Kumar told reporters that the boat carrying around 30 people overturned in the river at around 10am on Thursday. While 20 people were rescued, others were swept away by the current and the bodies of four of them were recovered on Friday, he said.The deceased were identified as Ajmal (4), Wasim (11), Pintu Sahani (22) and Shamshul (40).Gaighat BDO Sanjay Kumar Rai told TOI on Friday that the rescue operation would continue on Saturday as well.He said the local administration had handed out financial assistance of Rs4 lakh to each victims family after postmortem. He said the boat was overloaded and sank. "The boat could have carried a maximum of 10-15 persons only," he added.Angry villagers protested on the streets and shouted at the political leaders who reached the spot to share their grief. A peculiar situation was created when the villagers angrily protested after a senior opposition leader reached there to meet the grieving people on Friday. "Now that we have lost our children, they (leaders) have arrived to show their faces. Will their presence bring our dead children back?" cried a local woman.
