Over 900 extremists arrested, 25 killed in Jharkhand in past 2 yrs: DGP

Ranchi, Jan 26 (PTI) As many as 909 extremists, including top Maoist commanders, have been arrested over the past two years in Jharkhand during the course of anti-naxal operations, Director General of Police Neeraj Sinha said on Wednesday. At least 25 Naxalites have been killed in various encounters, he said.A huge cache of arms and ammunition and about Rs 44 lakh, collected as levy by the ultras, were seized, Sinha stated. A total of 9,631 extremists have been arrested in the state since its creation on November 15, 2000, the top officer said, addressing police personnel here after unfurling the Tricolour on the 73rd Republic Day. "Recently (In the past two years), 909 Naxalites, including one politburo member, one central committee member, ten zonal commanders, 31 sub-zonal commanders and forty-two area commanders, have been arrested as a result of effective campaigns launched by Jharkhand Police. "Apart from that, 349 country-made weapons including 74 police weapons... 14,885 cartridges, 629 IEDs and 3,878 detonators were recovered.... At least 25 Naxalites have been killed in various encounters," the DGP said. The surrender and rehabilitation policy designed to bring Naxalites into the mainstream has also yielded positive results, as 34 top Naxalites have given up arms, he added.Sinha, during his speech, also emphasised the need to contain cyber crime in the state. Under the state’s online FIR system, 61,770 of 70,280 cases have been disposed of.Jharkhand has conducted several awareness campaigns to caution people against cyber fraud, he said. Providing details of modernisation initiatives, he said a total of 519 police stations of the state have been linked with Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS). The Jharkhand Police has created "State Emergency Response System" under which anyone in need can dial 112 and get assistance. Besides, anti-human trafficking units have been set up in all districts to check the menace, Sinha added. PTI NAM RMS RMS
