Ranchi, Oct 1 (PTI) The process of quantification of rainfall during the four-month-long monsoon season ended in Jharkhand on September 30 with the state receiving 20 per cent rain deficiency, which is close to normal, a weather official said on Saturday.A deviation of 19 per cent rainfall, either surplus or deficit, is considered to be normal by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).Officially the rainfall data from June 1 to September 30 is counted as monsoon rain by IMD and the rest is counted as post-monsoon rain, which begins from October 1, the official said. The eastern state might receive light to moderate rainfall from October 2 to October 6 under the influence of a low-pressure system, the official said.“The IMD counts rain data from June 1 to September 30 as monsoon rainfall, even though it withdraws from Jharkhand by October 10-12. Despite scanty rainfall in the first two months of monsoon break, the overall rain count ended with 20 per cent deficiency, which is close to normal,” in-charge of Ranchi Meteorological Centre Abhishek Anand told PTI.The state has received 817.8mm of rainfall from June 1 to September 30 against the normal rainfall of 1022.9mm during the period. In the first two months of monsoon, the state’s overall rainfall deficit was at 49 per cent. Jharkhand had received 258.7mm of rainfall from June 1 to July 31 against the normal rainfall of 508.2mm, which was the highest shortfall since 2014.“Due to good rainfall in August and September, the overall deficit came down to 20 per cent,” Anand said. However, nine Jharkhand districts are still facing a rain deficit of 31 per cent to 59 per cent.Pakur and Sahibganj have been the worst affected districts due to scanty rainfall. They recorded the highest deficit at 59 per cent respectively.Other seven districts facing over 30 per cent rainfall deficit are Godda , Jamtara, Garhwa , Palamu , Deoghar , Chatra, and Dhanbad , according to Ranchi Meteorological Centre.Anand said the state is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall from October 2 due to the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.“Major impact of the system is likely to be visible from October 3 afternoon to October 5 afternoon in Jharkhand, which might play a spoilsport in Durga puja,” he said.
