Ranchi: Jharkhand will become the first state to introduce micro ATM services in its post offices. The micro ATMs have been endowed with a bio-metric scanner, 2D scanner, camera, printer and a card swipe machine. "If the plan is successful, 1,30,000 such machines will be installed in post offices across the country." However, a direct link to CBS will ensure that problems do not arise in micro ATMs. "After the machines have been set up in all the village post offices, 85% of the rural areas in Jharkhand will become truly cashless in a month.

Ranchi: Jharkhand will become the first state to introduce micro ATM services in its post offices. As many as 3,109 post offices across the state will be equipped with the device, which will allow users to withdraw, deposit and transfer money using their credit, debit or bank account linked with Aadhaar cards. The device will also help users to open bank accounts and pay their bills. As many as 941 banks in rural post offices in Ranchi and Jamshedpur will initiate the service during the first stage of the process. The micro ATMs have been endowed with a bio-metric scanner, 2D scanner, camera, printer and a card swipe machine. "After the machines have been set up in all the village post offices, 85% of the rural areas in Jharkhand will become truly cashless in a month. The rest of the areas have so far been identified as technologically not feasible. We are trying to establish an infrastructure to link those areas," said Anil Kumar, chief postmaster general (CPMG) of Jharkhand on Friday. "A user will be given a receipt after a transaction which will let them withdraw or deposit money from the post office."The new machines will be linked to the Central banking system (CBS), unlike the Sanchay post service, which was linked to private servers. Sanchay post servers were found to be incompatible to CBS. However, a direct link to CBS will ensure that problems do not arise in micro ATMs. "The total data transferred by the machines will also be very less and ensure smooth functioning. This has been done keeping in mind that the device will be soon in the hands of both postmasters and postmen who will be on the move," Kumar said. The devices are currently linked to CBS, NREGA and electronic money order (eMO). "If the plan is successful, 1,30,000 such machines will be installed in post offices across the country."
