A lower court in Meghalaya has granted anticipatory bail to ruling National People`s Party (NPP) MLA Thomas Sangma in a rape case

A lower court in Meghalaya has granted anticipatory bail to ruling National People`s Party (NPP) MLA Thomas Sangma in a rape case. Sangma had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge after an FIR was lodged with the police for raping and threatening a woman.

Sangma is also an advisor to Chief Minister Conard Sangma. Sangma`s advocate Kaustav Paul said on Wednesday, "The court has granted interim bail on the condition that Sangma does not go out of the court`s jurisdiction without prior permission and does not obstruct the investigation of the case." The court has also directed the accused MLA to maintain a distance from the complainant and the prosecution witness and not to make any inducement or threat to the complainant and the prosecution witness.

Apart from this, the court also directed Sangma to cooperate with the police team probing the alleged rape case. A woman had lodged an FIR against Sangma in the office of the Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills district for allegedly sexually assaulting her.
