Officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation on Thursday began a detailed check of their travel history and contact tracing.

In an incident that further accentuates the need for Surat to have its own genome sequencing capability, Mirror has learnt that of the 21 Covid patients whose samples tested positive for the Delta Plus variant of coronavirus, two had likely travelled to Surat.

Officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation on Thursday began a detailed check of their travel history and contact tracing.

While no case of Delta Plus variant has been identified in Gujarat by the lone sequencing lab in Gandhinagar, sources informed that two men who had travelled to Surat for a marriage function from Mumbai had gone back and tested positive for this particular variant.

However, Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani said, “There is a talk that two persons who tested positive for the Delta plus variant in Maharashtra may have had a travel history to Surat.

We are currently investigating the facts of this information. However, till date, we have no confirmation of the same.”
