This move will not only help save electricity, but also earn some revenue for the TMC. There are nearly 32,500 streetlights in the city, of which 7,200 are powered by LED bulbs since 2012. After receiving a good response, the TMC plans to replace the remaining streetlights with LED bulbs.

THANE: In a move to save energy, the Thane civic body is planning to replace the sodium-vapour streetlights with LED bulbs.

This will be done in phases. The streetlights will be fitted with sensors which will help the lamps get activated based on the natural light available.

This means that the light will brighten up depending on the brightness of the area. This will reduce consumption of power and will also cut down costs. The TMC will appoint a contractor who will install and maintain these lamps free of cost.

The contractor will be reimbursed depending on the money saved on power bills. The contractor will also have to share his profits with the civic body. Currently, the TMC spends nearly Rs 17 crore on operating the streetlights.

By using only LED bulbs, the TMC hopes to reduce costs by almost 75%. A proposal regarding this will be sent for approval at the general body meeting next week. Once approved, the first phase of replacing 10,000 streetlights will begin.
