Two arms of Trichy Junction Road over Bridge opened

After a huge public outcry demanding the commissioning of the two completed arms of Trichy Junction Road over Bridge (RoB), the Madurai and Central bus stand arms of the RoB were opened for vehicular movement on Monday. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami opened the two arms for traffic through video conferencing.With six arms, namely Chennai, Madurai, Railway junction, Central bus stand, a stretch connecting RoB with high-level rotary, and Dindigul, Trichy junction RoB was proposed by the state highways department in 2011. However, the Madurai arm and Central bus stand arm were not opened for traffic while Railway Junction arm and Dindigul were in service. Except the Chennai arm, works on all other arms including Madurai and Central bus stand arms were completed about two months ago. All other arms including Central bus stand, Dindigul, and Junction arms will have downward movement of vehicles," a senior official with city traffic police said.

The project aimed at redirecting the vehicles heading to other district s via Trichy had faced hurdles in land transfer issues between the state highways, railways, and defence. Except the Chennai arm, works on all other arms including Madurai and Central bus stand arms were completed about two months ago. However, the Madurai arm and Central bus stand arm were not opened for traffic while Railway Junction arm and Dindigul were in service."As of now, upward movement will be permitted only in the Madurai arm. All other arms including Central bus stand, Dindigul, and Junction arms will have downward movement of vehicles," a senior official with city traffic police said. Traffic police sources added that one-ways in the entry and exit points of the RoB would be severely monitored by traffic police to ensure hassle free vehicular movement. "The authorities should not entertain encroachments on service and approach roads, while ensuring illumination for the safety of commuters and pedestrians on the RoB," C Balasubramanian, a resident of Karumandapam said.Claiming that sign boards were provided wherever it is needed, the districtadministration said that phase II of the woks would commence soon. It include the replacement of the old RoB across the railway tracks, Kallukuzhi arm, and railway quarters arm.
