more-in The district administration has instructed the Public Works Department to act swiftly and clear inlet channels of weed growth and obstructions in culverts and irrigation structures so as to ensure that the water reached tail-end areas to enable farmers take up samba cultivation. Speaking at a review meeting with officials to discuss the steps to be taken ahead of the water flow, Collector K. Rajamani said samba paddy was expected to be raised on about 86,400 acres in the canal-irrigated areas. Hence, steps should be taken to ensure that water was stored to the maximum capacity in all system tanks linked to the irrigation canals in the district. The PWD should take up appropriate steps to clear the canals and inlet channels in order to ensure that water flowed to the tail-end. Monitoring teams would be formed under revenue divisional officers to supervise the work. All works taken up under the kudimaramathu scheme should be expedited and completed in time for the water release. Mr. Rajamani also directed the Department of Cooperation to move adequate quantity of fertilizers to meet the demands of farmers and sanction crop loans in time. The Agriculture department should ensure that adequate quantity of seeds and other inputs were readily available to farmers. Thanjavur With the Mettur Reservoir set to be opened on Thursday, the Thanjavur district administration has nominated monitoring officers at the divisional level and zonal officers at the taluk level to ensure that the water reached tail-end areas of irrigation canals in the district. The public works department (PWD) has been instructed to expedite and complete desilting and kudimaramathu works in the district within the next few days, Collector A. Annadurai said at a review meeting of monitoring and zonal officers here on Tuesday. In order to supervise the work and ensure that the water reached the tail-end areas, senior officers in the rank of district revenue officer (DRO) have been nominated as monitoring officers at the divisional level. While the DRO will be the monitoring officer for Pattukottai division, the chief executive of Arignar Anna Sugar Factory will be in charge of Thanjavur division. The senior regional manager of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation will look after Kumbakonam division. Zonal officers have been nominated at the taluk level too. They have been instructed to work in coordination with PWD and Rural Development officials. All local bodies have also been instructed to make removal of garbage dumped along canals their top priority. Maintenance works have been taken up along canals for a total distance of about 316 km at an estimated ?6 crore through PWD, and for a stretch of about 166 km through the Rural Development Department. Inspection The monitoring officers and zonal officers will inspect the works under way and also ensure that the canals are cleared of impediments, Mr.Annadurai said. The Collector inspected desilting and kudimaramathu works at Ammapettai and Papanasamy panchayat unions on Tuesday. He inspected desilting works on a three-km stretch of Vadavaru in Ammapettai union and instructed officials to plant tree saplings on the banks of the canal to prevent soil erosion. The saplings will be maintained by beneficiaries of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Similarly, workers under the job scheme will be deployed for clearing Puthur and Idaiyiruppu canals, he added.
