The saying - finding big things from small places - is true for this small roadside eatery located on East Chithirai Street in Srirangam. This small stall serves one of the best aloo parathas and sweet chapathi s and have at least 100 loyal customers just for the two dishes.Bombay Chapathi Stall, earlier called Ranga Bhavan, was opened by D Radheshyam 26 years ago out of desperation to make some money for a major heart surgery for his son. Though the eatery initially received lukewarm response as people were hesitant to try out north Indian food, he said that business picked up around five years later and has flourished ever since.Now, the eatery is open from 6.30pm to 10pm every day and serves at least 100 people daily."I moved to Trichy from Rajasthan almost 27 years ago after I got a job opportunity here. I started the eatery primarily to afford medical expenses for my son. Back then my eatery was called Ranga Bhavan, but I changed it to Bombay Chapathi Stall a few years back," Radheshyam told TOI.He added that the eatery did not do well initially because people in the city did not like chapathi and dal or knew much about Rajasthani cuisine. "But once they tasted our aloo paratha and sweet chapathi, they instantly fell in love with them and soon many became our loyal customers just because of these two dishes," he said.Along with Radheshyam, his wife Santhosh Devi and daughter Monu help in taking care of the eatery.While aloo paratha is prepared the conventional way, sweet chapathi is made with gulab jamun stuffing. "Aloo paratha is served along with peas masala, dal and chutney – people love this combination. On the other hand, sweet chapathi worked well because it tastes like a unique version of boli," Monu said.Two pieces each of aloo paratha and sweet chapathi cost Rs35 respectively, while two chapathis cost Rs25.Devi said that much of the eatery’s popularity owed to small children and youngsters in love with the chaat items served there."Be it bhel puri, samosa or pani puri, we make it all in authentic Rajasthani style which everyone love. Apart from this, our eatery was one of the first to serve kachori in the city," she said.When asked if they have any plans of expanding their business, Radheshyam said, "Only a few years ago we made some modifications to the eatery and changed the name to Bombay Chapathi Stall. So we are not looking to expand the business any more in the near future."
