AMMK blames police for death of party worker

Trichy: The death of a 54-year-old functionary of T T V Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) in Thanjavur on Friday has triggered a controversy. He was referred to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on July 17. Kumaraselvan and his brother had attacked AIADMK member Balamurugan, 44, of the same village.Police admitted him to a private hospital in Pattukkottai. He died in the hospital on Friday morning.Terming his death unnatural, AMMK functionaries staged a protest on the hospital premises demanding action against Madhukkur police inspector and AIADMK functionaries who allegedly influenced the police to drag the AMMK man into the case. However, we have recommended a magisterial inquiry into the matter,” Senthilkumar told TOI.

The party workers alleged that he died after police beat him while questioning him in connection with a case.Kumaraselvan, 54, a former three-time panchayat president of Pazhaverkadu village near Madhukkur in Thanjavur district and a general body member of the AMMK, died of heart attack while undergoing treatment at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on Friday morning.Kumaraselvan complained of chest pain when the Madukkur police questioned him in connection with a case. Kumaraselvan and his brother had attacked AIADMK member Balamurugan, 44, of the same village.Police admitted him to a private hospital in Pattukkottai. He was referred to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on July 17. Thanjavur superintendent of police of Thanjavur T Senthilkumar denied the allegation and said he had recommended a judicial enquiry into the issue.“There is no truth in the allegation. The police questioned him legally. As he developed chest pain, police admitted him to the hospital. However, we have recommended a magisterial inquiry into the matter,” Senthilkumar told TOI.
