TRICHY: A DMK functionary who was formerly the member of district panchayat council was arrested by Perambalur police on Thursday for assaulting a woman at her beauty parlour about a month ago. As the footage of entire incident recorded in a CCTV camera installed at the beauty parlour went viral, the DMK high command in an official statement suspended the former district panchayat council member from party’s primary membership.Sources identified the arrested man as S Selvakumar who was formerly the district panchayat council member in Peramablur representing DMK. Selvakumar, a few months back was said to have financially supported one beautician Sathya who has been operating beauty parlours in Perambalur town. Meanwhile Selvakumar had been seeking Sathya to repay the loan she took for expanding her business. About a month back, Selvakumar had assaulted Sathya at her beauty parlour in Venkatesapuram locality demanding her to settle the loan.After the incident, the former panchayat council member as well the victim were said to have come in terms to address the financial dispute amicably. However, it is alleged that Selvakumar had again threatened Sathya to repay the loan. Meanwhile, a CCTV footage of last month’s incident in which Selvakumar assaulted the beautician was uploaded in social media platforms attracting huge public attention. Based on a complaint lodged by victim, Perambalur police said that they have arrested the former panchayat council member on Thursday.As the incident attracted widespread criticism against DMK on social media platforms, party general secretary K Anbazhagan on Thursday suspended S Selvakumar from party’s primary membership for bringing disrespect to the party. It may be recalled that a DMK cadre in Chennai was suspended from party’s primary membership in August 2018 for assaulting workers in Biriyani stall demanding free food.
