Trichy: A large police team headed by the assistant commissioner of the anti-land grabbing special cell, P Chandran, conducted a surprise inspection at Trichy central prison and the special prison for women on Thursday. However, the inspection by the 50-member team yielded nothing substantial as no contraband items were seized.The check was conducted after images of Puzhal central jail inmates enjoying an extravagant lifestyle went viral a few days ago attracting flak for the state police from several quarters. Subsequently, they had conducted searches at the central prisons in Coimbatore, Salem and Cuddalore recently.On Thursday, the team headed by Chandran commenced searches at Trichy central prison around 6 am. The cells of remand and convict prisoners were checked for up to two-and-a-half hours. The special prison for women also saw a flurry of activity with the police personnel conducting a thorough inspection. But no major contraband items were seized by the police personnel in both the prisons. “Not even cigarettes or beedis were found during the inspection,” said a source from the central prison. While the central prison has around 1,300 inmates, there are around 70 prisoners at the special prison for women.
