Trichy: Three weeks after removing the encroachments hindering the vehicular movement on Heber Road, Trichy corporation carried out yet another eviction drive on Thursday on the same stretch. Officials said that recurrence of encroachments in more than 30 spots across the cleared stretch near district court forced them for another eviction drive.Falling under ward number 44 in Ponmalai zone, a kilometre-long Heber Road branching off from district court till Palakkarai RoB was encroached at several spots mostly by commercial outlets. Serving as the crucial link between Cantonment and Palakkarai, the encroachments were hindering the vehicular movement in the stretch dotted with a police station, departmental stores, and meat stalls.Subsequently, Trichy Corporation on September 18 had carried out an eviction drive and cleared encroachments in more than 25 spots. However, most of the stalls particularly night food outlets returned to its spots weeks after the eviction drive. “Encroachments are back to a square on old post office road and near Sedal Mariyamman temple on Heber Road. Civic body should ensure that encroachments are not making a comeback,” Karthikeyan Sundaram, a resident of New Raja Colony told TOI.As the complaints were apprised to the civic body, corporation officials in Ponamlai zone said that yet another eviction drive was carried out in Heber Road. “We have planned to clear the space frequently so that encroachments will not return,” an official with civic body said. As corporation said that widening of Heber Road could be taken up based on the fund availability, residents opined the widening the existing road is the only solution for containing the encroachments from returning.
