No more all-whites: Nurses in TN soon to sport colourful uniforms in hospitals

The uniform for male nurses too has got a makeover according to a government order passed recently. Uniforms for all would carry a name badge and also the logo of “Tamil Nadu government nursing”. TRICHY: The all-white ensemble of government nurses’ uniform in Tamil Nadu is all set to become history as it will be replaced by colourful outfits including shirt and trousers, chudidhar and sari for female nurses. On the other hand, female nursing superintendent grade II and grade I will be sporting pink and pista green sari respectively. Nurses with over 10 years of experience and female nursing superintendent grade II and grade I will be provided overcoats as well.

TRICHY: The all-white ensemble of government nurses’ uniform in Tamil Nadu is all set to become history as it will be replaced by colourful outfits including shirt and trousers, chudidhar and sari for female nurses. The uniform for male nurses too has got a makeover according to a government order passed recently. State health and family welfare department officials said that the new uniform would come into effect soon after a few meetings.There will be five different kinds of uniform for female nurses and four for male nurses based on their seniority and designations. Uniforms for all would carry a name badge and also the logo of “Tamil Nadu government nursing”. Women will sport white leather shoes while men will put on black leather cut shoes. The nursing fraternity has given a thumbs-up to the new uniforms which they consider a welcome change from the short pinafore, long stockings, stiff cap and belle which were uncomfortable.“We actually feel a little sad that a tradition which is at least 150 years old is finally undergoing change, but considering the bigger picture we’re elated,” joint-secretary of Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association S N Jayabarathi told TOI. Office-bearers of nurses’ association said that the models of the new uniforms were designed by experts with comfort given primary importance.The uniform for female nurses up to 10 years of experience will be shirt and trouser and for those above 10 years, chudidhar. On the other hand, female nursing superintendent grade II and grade I will be sporting pink and pista green sari respectively. The uniform for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses will be pink shirt and pink trouser. Nurses with over 10 years of experience and female nursing superintendent grade II and grade I will be provided overcoats as well. All male nurses will wear shirt and trouser and those above 10 years of experience and male nursing superintendent of grade II and grade I will get overcoats.The Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association has for long been requesting a change in uniform to suit their comfort and had also submitted petitions regarding the same.As a result, the state health and family welfare department conducted a meeting with Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association in October 2017.Following this, a committee was constituted by the health department to study the same. In August this year, a meeting was held and a booklet comprising recommendations of the uniform committee was furnished after which the designs were finalised.
