2 temporary bus shelters opened to meet Pongal rush

Trichy: District administration jointly with city police and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has opened two temporary bus shelters to cater the rush during Pongal. Williams Road temporary bus shelter is located within a stone’s throw distance from Central bus stand, officials added. The bus shelters decongest the Central bus stand during this period. Since the existing Central bus stand is vulnerable to traffic due to space crunch, the two temporary bus shelters launched on Friday will function till January 21.To cater the extra rush during festivals as people would travel to native places, the district administration since 2013 has been establishing temporary bus shelters. With Pongal being celebrated on January 15, the district administration has opened a couple of temporary bus shelters on Williams Road in Cantonment and near Mannarpuram roundabout.

While Thanjavur and Nagapattinam bound buses would commence their journey from the temporary bus shelter on Williams Road, city police said that Madurai and Pudukkottai bound buses would start and end their services from the other temporary bus shelter near Mannarpuram.TNSTC officials added that city buses (circular services) would be operated more in numbers to connect Mannarpuram bus shelter with Central and Chathiram bus stands. Williams Road temporary bus shelter is located within a stone’s throw distance from Central bus stand, officials added. Residents and visitors were instructed by the city police not to park their vehicles over the arterial and commercial streets witnessing heavy movement of people heading for festive purchase.
