Over 5 tonnes of banned tobacco products seized, 2 held

Trichy: Police seized 5.6 tonnes of banned tobacco products worth over Rs 40 lakh from two godowns in Karur on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the police carried a search at the godowns in Vellaigoundan Nagar and Rayanur and seized 202 bags and 216 boxes filled with tobacco products. Two persons have also been arrested in connection with the stocking of tobacco products meant for illegal sales across Karur.The arrested have been identified as M Thangaraj, 46 and R Selvaraj, 46 both hailing from Karur. According to police, the action was based on a tip-off from Namakkal police who had informed the Karur police on tobacco consignments being stocked at a couple of locations in Karur.
