Trichy: A 23-year-old engineering student was stabbed to death by a four-member gang near Siruganur on Tuesday night when he questioned their act of misbehaving with his 22-year-old girlfriend.According to police, the deceased was identified as K Tamizhvanan, a final year engineering student of a private college in Samayapuram and a native of Thinnakkunam village near Siruganur. On the occasion of Pongal festival, Tamizhvanan had gone to a church in Konalai village located on the Trichy – Chennai national highway along with his girlfriend in the evening. She was a native of a nearby village.Around 7.30 pm, while they were returning, they stopped their two-wheeler at a secluded place between Kumulur and Punjai Sangenthi villages and were talking. Since the area was near the forest department’s social forest area, the stretch was deserted, police said.Meanwhile, a four-member gang approached them and inquired about them. The gang, reported to be in an inebriated condition, picked up a quarrel with Tamizhvanan, asking them to leave the place.They also attempted to misbehave with the girl, police said. When Tamizhvanan objected to their act, one of the gang members stabbed him with a knife on his stomach and fled the scene, police added. The girl contacted 108 ambulance service and informed their parents. On information, Siruganur police rushed to the spot. Tamizhvanan and the girl were rushed to Government Hospital in Lalgudi. However, Tamizhvanan died before reaching the hospital.When contacted, the superintendent of police, Zia Ul Haq said that both the boy and the girl knew each other. “Though both belonged to different castes, there is no caste link with this incident. According to the girl's statement, all the four youth are not known to her. So, there is no rivalry angle as well. We have initiated the probe and within two or three days we will arrest the accused,” he added. The police registered a case and began investigations to nab the gang members.
