Trichy: Teachers Association of Bharathidasan University (TABU) has sought speedy appointment of the syndicate member in the professor cadre, a post which has been lying vacant for the past eight months. The association’s executive committee passed a resolution in this regard on Tuesday urging governor and chancellor Banwarilal Purohit to make the appointment at the earliest.According to TABU, the delay in making the appointment has been affecting the representation of professors in the university. Out of total 12 elected members in the 21-member syndicate of Bharathidasan University, four is filled by university teachers. While the vice-chancellor nominates a member each in the cadre of assistant and associate professor, the remaining two posts are occupied by teachers in the professor cadre.Unlike the assistant or associate professor who is nominated by the VC, in the case of professors, it is the governor who must make the appointment based on the VC’s recommendation. “The university has already sent three names leaving it to the governor to take the decision. But there has been inordinate delay in making the appointment,” said a member of TABU. Vice-chancellor P Manisankar told TOI that the “governor’s office has sought a few clarifications on the names suggested and we have responded to the same. We are expecting the announcement within a week.”TABU has also requested the governor to sanction one more syndicate member in the professor cadre. Citing BDU statutes, TABU president V Sethuramalingam, in the letter to the governor, said that there should be one member of the syndicate in the professor cadre for each of the 10 departments or centres in the university. While the number of departments exceeded 30, the syndicate membership remained at 2 as it was during the launch of the university, which should ideally be increased to three, he said.Responding to the demand, Manisankar said that the demand raised by TABU was as per the statutes of the university. Therefore, necessary steps would be taken to pass a resolution in this regard in the next syndicate meeting which would then be sent for governor’s consent.
